FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Maroon Team made the most of their nine hits collecting nine runs on their way to taking a 1-0 lead in the best of three Maroon-White World Series.
Trevor Funk (Jr., Culpeper, Va.) led off the game with a walk and was quickly sacrificed to second by Drew Williams (Jr., Mason, OH). Jimmy Earp (Sr., Beckley, W.Va.) hit the next pitch into left field to drive home Funk with the early 1-0 lead. The Maroon threatened to score again but Earp was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch.
In the top of the second, the Maroon added to their lead when Brian Coleman (So., Waynesburg, Pa.) reached on an infield single and Tyler Barnette (Jr., Core, W.Va.) moved him into scoring position with another sacrifice bunt. Coleman moved to third when Eric Price (So., Danville, W.Va.) lined a shot back at pitcher, Ryan Fenwick (So., Leonardtown, Md.), who was able to recover and record the out at first base. He then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0.
Jeff Fansler (Jr., Pinnacle, N.C.) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third when he lead off the inning with a towering home run to left field. The White Team then tied the score in the bottom of the 4th when Ryan Fondriest (Sr., Dover, Ohio) lead off with a single through the left side. Fondriest moved to third when Drew Trump (Sr., Beckley, WV) singled into the gap in right center. Matt Emerick (So., Parkersburg, W.Va.) hit a hard ground ball to the left side and Coleman was able to make a great play to get the runner at first but Fondriest scored the tying run.
The Maroon team didn't take long to regain the lead as they tallied a three spot in the top of the 5th. Price singled to right to lead off the inning and Jeremy Walter was able to complete a successful sacrifice to move Price to second. Trevor Funk then stroked an RBI single to right center and promptly stole second. With two outs Jimmy Earp hit a ball in the hole between a diving third baseman and shortstop that deflected off a glove and rolled to deep short. A hustling Funk was able to score on the infield single. Earp then swiped second and third base prior to a Nick Hallis (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) walk. Shaun Vernesoni (Sr., Meadville, Pa.) then hit a slow roller towards third that he beat out scoring the third run of the inning.
The top of the sixth came and four more runners crossed the plate with the highlight being Trevor Funk driving in three when he tripled to right center. Funk closed the scoring to batters later when he scored on an error.
Tyler Kincaid (Jr., Elkton, Md.) earned the win pitching three innings and allowing one run. LG Shea (Sr., Beckley, W.Va.) pitched four innings to record the save.
