FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State head basketball coach today announced the seventh addition to the 2012-13 roster by signing Malik Stith, a transfer from St. John's University. Stith will have one season of eligibility remaining.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Malik into our basketball family,” Calhoun said after receiving Stith’s letter-of-intent. “We needed a true point guard with the ability to come in and lead our team. We needed a floor general who can make an impact on both ends of the floor, and I think we have that with Malik on board now.”
According to Calhoun, Stith is a creative playmaker who can create scoring opportunities for himself and others. He’ll join a lineup that already includes two potential All-Americans in senior wing Isaac Thornton and junior forward Brendan Cooper. Calhoun also expects Stith to provide the grit and toughness necessary to slow-down opposing point guards in the high-scoring WVIAC.
“He’s tough,” Calhoun said. “He’s fearless. He wants to guard the other team’s best perimeter player. Offensively, he can do a lot of things too. He can really pass the ball, and he can make shots from the perimeter. He makes other players better.
“The best thing about Malik is he brings us so much experience having played a lot of minutes in the best league in college basketball,” continued Calhoun “He’s played in a lot of big games, and played against a lot of tough opponents. He told me he wants to win a championship. He’ll fit right in with our guys.”
Stith joins Stevie Browning, Trevor Evans, Ke'Chaun Lewis, Joey Vuyancih, Chase Morgan and Brendan Cooper as members of this year's basketball recruiting class.
