FSU Tops Davis & Elkins, 80-74

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Isaac Thornton's 31 points helped Fairmont State snap a four-game losing streak by defeating Davis & Elkins, 80-64, on Monday night at Joe Retton Arena. Thornton notched a double-double by adding 12 rebounds. He also contributed four steals and three assists in the victory.

In addition to Thornton's performance, Fairmont State (8-15, 6-13 WVIAC) got 18 points from Steve Custis. Chris Thompson added eight points and Mike Hurd hit two key three-pointers in the second half for six points.

Malik Tinsley turned in a solid performance with 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead Davis & Elkins (6-16, 3-16 WVIAC). Paolo Ivis contributed 13 points and D'Quan Lynch added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Senators.

Fairmont State limited Davis & Elkins to 42 percent shooting for the game, including just 19 percent (4-of-21) from behind the arc. The Senators held a 46-38 advantage on the glass, but the Falcons out-scored D&E 25-20 in second chance points.

Thornton helped give Fairmont State a 36-29 lead at the break by scoring 17 of his points in the first 20 minutes Thornton was 6-of-9 from the field and was 2-of-3 from the free throw line. As a team, the Falcons shot just 35 percent from the field and struggled from long range making just 2-of-13 its attempts. D&E didn't fare much better shooting 35 percent from the field and making just 3-of-12 of its shots from three-point distance. The Senators were also plagued by 11 first half turnovers.

D&E raced out of the gates quickly in the second half scoring the first six points and erasing the deficit to grab a 37-36 lead with 16:54 to go. The Falcons responded, though, and rattled off a 11-2 run over the next three minutes to push back ahead 47-39. The Senators would not go away and took the lead at 54-52 on a three-pointer from Pinckney with just under 10 minutes to play.

FSU again had an answer as Custs hit a three, Thompson hit a layup, and a driving Custis dunked through the D&E defense to make it 62-57 with 6:29 to go. The Falcons could not shake free from Davis & Elkins, and an old-fashioned three-point play from Tinsley cut the FSU advantage to just 72-70 with 2:16 to go. Hurd came through with a big three-pointer on FSU's next possession, and D&E would only get as close as four points down the stretch and hold on to the 80-74 victory.

The win gave Brett Vincent his 100th career victory. Vincent had 92 wins as the coach of Alderson-Broaddus.

Fairmont State will be back in action on Thursday on the road at Charleston at 7:30 p.m.
