#4 Azusa Pacific 279.705, #5 Quinnipiac 277.525FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Azusa Pacific held nearly a two-point advantage in the tumbling event to edge Quinnipiac, 279.705-277.525, on Friday afternoon in the first quarterfinal meet of the day.
Azusa Pacific will advance to Saturday's first semifinal at 10 a.m. against the winner of the Baylor and King University meet.
APU grabbed a one point lead at halftime after opening up a .70 lead in compulsory.
After Quinnipiac won the toss event (29.15-28.20), Azusa Pacific picked up the victory in the tumbling event, 56.025-54.225, and narrowly won the team routine, 98.48-98.14, to pick up the victory and advance.
APU's Heat Two Pyramid recorded the first perfect score of the weekend.
#1 Baylor 283.615, #8 King 258.965FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Baylor was nearly flawless after halftime to advance to the semifinals of the 2015 NCATA National Championship at Joe Retton Arena on Friday afternoon.
The first semifinal is now set on Saturday morning, when top-seeded Baylor takes on fourth-seeded Azusa Pacific.
After taking a 96.30-92.45 lead into halftime, the Bears won the toss event (28.60-26.55) and ran away with the tumbling event by more than seven points to take a 13-point lead into the team routine.
Baylor then took the team event by a margin of 101.09-89.89 to seal the victory.
The Bears tallied a perfect score in the Compulsory Pyramid heat and recorded two 9.95 scores (Pyramid Heat 1, Pyramid Heat 2) during the meet. King picked up a 28.40-27.85 victory in the acro event.
#3 Oregon 280.875, #6 Alderson Broaddus 273.695FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Oregon outlasted Alderson Broaddus with a strong performance in the tumbling event to pick up the 280.875-273.695 victory and advance to the semifinal round of the NCATA Championship Tournament.
Oregon will advance to meet the winner of the Fairmont State and Hawaii Pacific meet on Saturday afternoon starting at 12:30 p.m.
In the first event of the evening, Oregon picked up a 37.95-37.65 victory in compulsory before falling to the Battlers in both the acro (29.50-29.40) and pyramid (29.75-29.60) events. Despite losing two of the three events prior to halftime, Oregon still went to the half with a slim 96.95-96.90 advantage.
The teams remained close following the pyramid and toss events, with each picking up a victory (ABU in Pyramid, Oregon in Toss).
Oregon outscored Alderson Broaddus in the tumbling event (56.925-51.875) and then wrapped up the victory with a 98.05-96.22 win in the team routine.
The Ducks recorded a pair of perfect scores (Compulsory Toss Heat, Pyramid Heat 2) and recorded a 9.95 in Acro Heat 2. OU also recorded a 9.75 or better in the final three tumbling heats to pull away from the Battlers. ABU also had an impressive performance to end its season, with a score of 9.90 or better in six heats.
#2 Hawaii Pacific 274.300, #7 Fairmont State 269.155FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Hawaii Pacific used a three-point advantage in the tumbling event and won five of the six events to advance past Fairmont State, 274.300-269.155, on Friday evening in the final quarterfinal of the NCATA National Championships at Joe Retton Arena.
With the loss, Fairmont State's season comes to an end with a 4-6 record. HPU advances to the semifinal round on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. when they take on the defending National Champion Oregon Ducks.
