Redmon, King Earn Top League Honors, 15 Named All-MEC

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State had 15 players honored by the Mountain East Conference on Tuesday afternoon, including Quincy Redmon, who was named MEC Defensive Player of the Year, and Laurence King, who garnered MEC Offensive Freshman of the Year honors.

Redmon, a junior from Keyser, W.Va., is the MEC Defensive Player of the Year after leading a resurgent Falcon defense in 2016. Redmon led the league with 12 sacks (10 solo), and was fourth in the league with 15 tackles for a loss. FSU held teams to just 95.5 yards rushing and just 15.1 points per game. Redmon also earned first team All-MEC honors as a defensive end.

King, a freshman from Greenbelt, Md., is the Offensive Freshman of the Year after averaging 138.2 all-purpose yards per game. King set a Fairmont State single-season record for receptions with 81, a total that led the MEC, for 869 yards and five touchdowns. He also led the league in kick return average with 32.3 yard per return, including two kick-return touchdowns. He was named to the All-MEC first team as a return specialist and second team as a wideout.

Redmon and King were joined on the All-MEC first team by offensive lineman Rodney Carroll, linebacker Marcus Porter and defensive backs Jacob Jean-Charles and Stephen Turner, giving FSU six first team selections.

Carroll earned All-MEC honors for the second-consecutive season after anchoring the FSU offensive line again this season from his left tackle position. Carroll was named to the All-MEC second team a season ago.

Porter, the team's leading tackler from his middle linebacker position, finished the year with 88 total stops, including six for a loss, and also added a forced fumble and safety for the stingy FSU defense. Porter earned league honors for the second-straight season after earning second team honors in 2015.

Jean-Charles is now a two-time first team All-MEC performer at the cornerback position after finishing the year with 41 stops and five pass break-ups. Jean-Charles also forced a fumble and recorded two sacks on the year.

Turner is the second member of the FSU defensive backfield to earn first team league honors after finished in a tie for second on the team in tackles with 53 and also recording four interceptions on the year. Turner led the league in interception return yards this season with 146 and also had a pick-six.

Quarterback Cooper Hibbs, running back Terrell Charles, wide receiver Fabian Guerra, center Cody Wilburn, linebacker Jerry Iweh, and safety Emanuel Ivey each earned second team all-league honors.

Hibbs, who sits in the top three in school history in nearly every passing category, was named to the All-MEC second team after finishing the year with 2,855 passing yards on 256-of-395 attempts. Hibbs also tallied 18 touchdowns and averaged 259.5 yards per game through the air.

Charles, who finished third in the league in rushing this season, tallied 853 yards on 187 carries and scored 12 rushing touchdowns on the year. Charles averaged 4.6 yards per carry and finished in a tie for second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns in 2016.

Guerra, Fairmont's all-time leader in receptions, finished the year with 70 catches for 787 yards and a team-high six touchdowns this season.

Starting center Wilburn became the second member of the FSU offensive line to earn league honors this season, being named to the second team after helping lead the unit from his center position.

Iweh, a sophomore outside linebacker, also earned second team honors after finishing sixth on the team in tackles with 40. Iweh also picked-off a pair of passes, forced a fumble and broke-up six passes for the FSU defense in 2016.

Ivey, a standout safety for the Falcons, became a two-time All-MEC performer following his senior season. Ivey finished the regular season ranking second on the team in tackles (53) and first in pass break-ups. Ivey also picked-off a team-high five passes as a senior, including three last week against Glenville State to garner MEC Defensive Player of the Week honors in week 11.

In addition to the 12 Falcons being named to the All-MEC first and second teams, defensive lineman Josh Ballard, defensive back Demonne Cox and kicker Sam Keil also earned MEC honorable mention for their performance for the Falcons this season.

West Virginia Wesleyan running back Michael Anderson was named MEC Offensive Player of the Year, West Liberty's Logan Deri was selected as the Defensive Freshman of the Year and Shepherd head coach Monte Cater was named MEC Coach of the Year, rounding out the five major awards presented by the league.

In addition to the individual awards, the league also announced the All-MEC teams. Shepherd, the regular season champions, led all schools with 9 first team All-MEC selections (four offense, five defense). Fairmont State, the MEC runner-up and NCAA Playoff participant, had six selections (one offense, four defense and one special teams), as did Notre Dame (five offense, one defense).

The all-conference teams and individual award winners are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
