Championship Sunday: Falcons, 'Toppers Vie for MEC Crown

- Top-ranked and No. 1-seeded Fairmont State will face second-seeded and 11th-ranked West Liberty in the 2017 Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship Game on Sunday afternoon.
- The two teams split a pair of regular season meetings, with FSU winning 86-81 in Fairmont back on Dec. 4 before the 'Toppers defeated FSU, 88-81, on Feb. 4 at the ASRC.
- It will be the fourth meeting in various tournaments between Jim Crutchfield and Jerrod Calhoun, with Crutchfield winning all four.
- This is also Calhoun's second conference tournament championship game appearance, the Falcons dropped both games. West Liberty defeated Fairmont State in the WVIAC Championship game back in 2013 and FSU fell to Glenville State in the 2015 MEC Championship Game.
- The Falcons are also searching for their first conference tournament championship in 33 years on Sunday afternoon (1984).
- Fairmont State hammered Shepherd in Saturday's semifinal round, 93-65, to advance to Sunday's Championship Game. The Falcons shot 54.5 percent from the floor (18-of-33) in the second half of Saturday's game to push its lead to as many as 30 (93-63) with 1:22 remaining. FSU bucketed 10 of its 15 three-point attempts in the final 20 minutes of play. FSU drilled 15 three-pointers in the victory.
- FSU had 19 assists on 32 made baskets in the win over Shepherd.
- No. 1-ranked Fairmont State got past the University of Charleston, 76-64, in a defensive struggle on Friday evening during the quarterfinal round. Fairmont's 76 points in the win were its second-lowest point total this season. Back on Nov. 19, FSU scored a season-low 71 points in a win over West Virginia Wesleyan.
- Fairmont State, the winner of 16 WVIAC Championships from 1947-1996, won its first regular season conference championship in 21 year's last Saturday with a 95-80 win over Shepherd at Joe Retton Arena.
- Fairmont's 29 wins this season are the most since Joe Retton led the Falcons to a 31-6 overall record back in 1975. The school record for wins in a season is 32.
- On Feb. 21, Fairmont State moved to No. 1 in the country for the first time since the final poll of the 1976 regular season when FSU was a member of NAIA.
- Prior to moving into the top spot in the NABC National Rankings on Feb. 21, FSU was ranked No. 2 in eight of the previous nine polls.
- FSU also extended its streak of being ranked in 29-consecutive NABC regular season polls, including 26 weeks in the top 10 in the country. The Falcons have also ranked in the top five of the rankings for the 12-straight poll releases.

- The Falcons have won by double-figures in 23 games this season, including 12 victories by 20 points or more. FSU have also scored over 100 points in 11 games this season and has reached 90 points in 23 of 30 games.
- In Friday's quarterfinal victory, FSU failed to reach 80 points for just the second time this season.
- The Falcons have also shot over 50 percent from the field 16 times and have shot over 40 percent from behind the arc 13 times. FSU has knocked-down double-digit three-pointers in 21 of 30 games this season.
- Fairmont State also holds the top spot in this week's edition of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Rankings that were released on Wednesday afternoon. WLU checked in at No. 4 in the rankings.
- The Falcons are 5-3 in the MEC Tournament under head coach Jerrod Calhoun. The Falcons were upset in the quarterfinal round of last year's MEC Tournament against Notre Dame College, 79-78. In 2015, FSU advanced to the MEC Finals before falling to Glenville State, 65-58.
- The Falcons currently have the second-best scoring offense in NCAA Division II at 98.1 points per game.
- In addition to being second in the country in scoring offense, the Falcons are also 12th in the country in assists per game (17.8), 11th in field goal percentage (50.2) and 15th in offensive rebounds per game (13.7). FSU is also third in the country in steals per game (10.4) and ninth in scoring margin (17.2).
- The Falcons have also made the seventh-most three-pointers in NCAA Division II this season (341).
- Trevor Andrews-Evans ranked 23rd in the country in blocked shots per game (2.1).
- Senior point guard Shammgod Wells currently ranks fifth in the country in steals per game (2.5), seventh in assists to turnover ratio (3.22) and 19th in assists per game (5.8). The senior reached double-figures in nine of the final 13 games this season.
