A-B Defeats FSU, 81-70

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Despite huge games from Steve Custis and Isaac Thornton, Alderson-Broaddus handed Fairmont State an 81-70 defeat on Saturday evening at Joe Retton Arena.

The Battlers extended their winning streak to 13 games as they improved to 14-2 overall and 11-1 in the league. Fairmont State slipped to 6-9 overall and 4-7 in the WVIAC.

Custis matched his career high with 32 points and Thornton added 27 for the Falcons. The two accounted for 59 of Fairmont State's 70 points. In fact, Custis and Thornton were the only players to record a field goal for the first 27 minutes of the game and only two other players finished the game with a made field goal.

A-B used a more balanced attack as four players reached double figures led by Kurklin Bohanon's 25. O'Dell Eargle came off the bench to notch 14, and Nate Barnes scored 13 and Roy Brown added 12.

The Battlers shot 51 percent from the field for the game, including a sizzling 69 percent (11-of-16) from behind the arc. Brown and Bohanon each knocked down four threes in the game. Fairmont State managed just 37 percent shooting from the field and connected on just 5-of-20 from behind the arc.

The first half went back-and-forth between the two teams, as Custis and Thornton just about did it all to keep Fairmont State within striking distance. Custis finished the half with 19 points, and Thornton notched 11 points, including a 7-0 run all by himself midway through the half to keep the Falcons close. Leading by just a point, 34-33, with 3:01 to go, the Battlers closed the half with a critical 7-0 run to take a 41-33 lead into the locker room.

A-B scored the first four points of the second half and never let Fairmont State get closer than seven points the rest of the way. On the four occasions FSU cut the lead to single digits, A-B would answer with a three-pointer to give it back a comfortable lead as it went on to the 81-70 victory.

Fairmont State will be back in action on Monday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at WV Wesleyan.
