Three Falcons Earn All-Region Recognition

CLARION, Pa. -- Three Fairmont State football players earned Don Hansen Football Gazette Super Region 1 honors, including junior Matt Wilmer who was named as the Special Teams Player of the Year for the region.

Sophomore linebacker Garrett Davis was named to the region's second team, while fullback Cody Reed was a third team selection.

Wilmer, a native of Keyser, W.Va., who has already garnered several awards this postseason, was the nation's top punt returner averaging 23 yards per return. His 530 yards were second in the nation despite 12 fewer returns than the leader. Wilmer's 93-yard punt return against Clarion was the longest in the NCAA in 2011, and 11 of the 23 punts he returned went into the opposition's territory. In addition, he had 316 yards on just nine kick returns (35.1 yards per return). He was a two-time WVIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honoree in 2011.

Davis, a sophomore from Havana, Fla., led Fairmont State with 101 total tackles (58 solo) in 2011. He also led the squad with 18 tackles for a loss and eight sacks. He forced two fumbles and had one interception on the year. Davis' 9.2 tackles per game were third in the WVIAC and ranked 47th in the country.

Reed, a senior from Berkeley Springs, W.Va., helped serve as the team's lead blocker for Fairmont State's running attack that averaged 163.6 yards per game and 4.4 yards per carry. Reed lined up at linebacker and at tight end at times, and finished the year with eight carries for 36 yards and five catches for 34 yards.

Along with Wilmer, the region's major award winners were WV Wesleyan's Adam Neugebauer (Offensive Player of the Year), Cheyney's Tim Hume (Defensive Player of the Year) and Winston-Salem State's Connell Maynor (Coach of the Year).

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen’s Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

The first-team and second-team all-region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2011 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named later this month.

A total of 118 players from 37 schools earned some form of Don Hansen All-Super Region 1 honors.
