Glenville, W.Va. -- Glenville State
benefited from an early second half run and then held of Fairmont State late in a 92-78 victory over the Falcons on Thursday evening at Jesse R. Lilly Arena.
Fairmont State (10-7, 7-6 WVIAC) had four players score in double digits.
Hailey Garrett had a solid all-around performance with 16 points, a team-high
10 rebounds and four assists. Briana Welch scored 15 points, Emily Lohr added
13 points and Kelsi Wright contributed with 12 points off the bench. Junior guard Kaitlin Snyder was limited to a season-low seven points connecting on just 3-of-13 of her shots from the floor.
The Pioneers (12-4, 10-2 WVIAC) were led by senior guard Tenisha Wilson who
scored 27 points and pulled down eight rebounds and four assists. Danielle Woodmore
added 11 points and a game-high 12 assists. Senior forward Mishae Miles
contributed with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Glenville State hit 13 three-pointers on the night compared to just four for Fairmont State. FSU, one of the league leaders in field goal percentage heading into the game, was limited to just 38 percent shooting from the floor. The Pioneers shot 40 percent from the floor.
The Pioneers took a five-point lead into halftime, and extended it to 12 points in the first five minutes of the second half. GSC would push its lead out to as many as 18 at 74-56 with 6:49 to go before the Falcons made one last push and went on a 14-2 run to pull within six at 76-70 with still just over four minutes to play. The Pioneers had the answer down the stretch, though, keyed by two three pointers by Ginny Petties to help secure the 92-78 victory.
Fairmont State will travel to Bluefield State on Saturday to take on the Blues at 2 p.m.
