FSU Rallies Past WV State In Five

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State rallied to defeat West Virginia State, 3-2, on Friday evening at Joe Retton Arena.

The win over West Virginia State gave head coach Larry Hill 600 victories in his storied career. Hill becomes just the 14th coach in NCAA Division II history to reach the 600-win plateau. He currently ranks eighth among active coaches in wins and is 14th all-time in Division II history.

"Getting to 600 wins really just means that I've been around a lot of great kids over the year, and I've really enjoyed coaching all of those years," coach Hill said following the match. "It's a great milestone, but I'm hoping to get this team to a conference championship and into the NCAA Tournament."

The Yellow Jackets twice held a one-set lead in the match winning set one 25-23 and set three 25-14. Fairmont State rallied each time picking up wins in set two (25-18) and a narrow win in set four (25-23) before taking the decisive fifth set 15-9.

The Falcons (18-6, 6-1 WVIAC) were led by Amber Wilson with 22 kills and six total block (two solo, four assisted). Bri Swann added 13 kills and seven digs for FSU in the victory. Tiff Smathers led the Falcons with 15 digs and Katherine Herrera chipped in eight. Jessica Margo distributed 46 assists for FSU.

WV State (5-14, 4-4 WVIAC) was led by Cameron Lewis with 17 kills in the match. Anneelise Albrecht recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Megan Lucas led the Yellow Jackets with 45 assists and 14 digs. Jessyca Gooch chipped in 13 digs.

The Falcons will return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Alderson-Broaddus for a WVIAC matchup. Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
