FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Concord's Jolyssa Brown put back an offensive rebound with no time left on the clock to give the Mountain Lions a 79-78 win over Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena.
The win snapped Fairmont State's seven-game winning streak and moved the Falcons' record to 17-8 overall and 14-7 in the WVIAC. The Mountain Lions moved to 18-6 overall and 15-5 in the conference.
With just 53 seconds left, Brown put-back a missed Camisha Alexander miss to give Concord a 77-74 lead. On FSU's next possession, Emily Lohr converted a huge four-point play by knocking down her fifth three-pointer of the game and getting fouled by Amanda Smith. After Lohr's made free throw put the Falcons up 78-77 with 32 seconds left, Alexander missed a running jumper and Kelsi Wright grabbed the rebound and was promptly fouled. Wright, though, could not convert her free throw giving Concord the ball with 12 seconds left.
The teams traded timeouts, and Alexander again got the ball and missed another jumper, but the Mountain Lions retained possession on a loose ball rebound out of bounds. With just 2.2 ticks left, Alexander took an off-balance shot on the inbounds pass, Brown got the rebound and put it back in with no time remaining on the clock to give Concord the victory.
The shot capped a brilliant night from Brown who led the team in points (24), rebounds (14), assists (five), blocks (two) and steals (three). Andrea Bertrand added 23 points for CU, and Alexander contributed 12 points.
Lohr poured in a career-high 27 points for FSU. Hailey Garrett had 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Tiffany Nicholson netted 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Kaitlin Snyder, coming off her 42-point performance against Davis & Elkins, was limited to just 13 points but notched a game-high eight assists.
Fairmont State shot 69 percent from the field in the first half, but made just 32 percent in the second half. Concord shot 49 percent from the field, but struggled from the free throw line making just 11-of-20. The Mountain Lions held a 38-32 advantage on the glass, with nine of those coming on the offensive end.
The Falcons will have a week off before their regular season finale at home next Saturday against West Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. It will be "Fan Appreciation Day" with half-price tickets for all seats in the arena.
